Travis Kelce won’t play in Chiefs’ season opener after knee injury: reports

It looks like the Kansas City Chiefs will start their Super Bowl LVI title defense without their best offensive weapon.

Travis Kelce will not play Thursday night against the Detroit Lions after hyperextending his knee during practice Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

His brother Jason Kelce, who plays center for the Philadelphia Eagles, said the tight end avoided serious injury.

Team CEO Clark Hunt even said that Kelce was a “playing time decision”, but that the 48-hour post-injury deadline was not enough. It will be the first time he has missed a game due to injury since his freshman year in 2013.

Kansas City has elevated tight end Matt Bushman from its practice squad, and Noah Gray will likely slip into the starting role.

Kelce may be coming off his best season in the NFL, which was his 10th in the league.

He finished the season with 110 receptions for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns, all of which are career highs. He exploited that in his second Super Bowl ring, scoring a touchdown against his brother’s Eagles.
