Teen dies after taking part in viral ‘One Chip’ TikTok challenge: ‘We’ve lost a rising star’

A Massachusetts teen died Friday after participating in a viral social media trend seen via TikTok known as the “One Chip Challenge,” which the teen’s family believes contributed to his untimely death, according to reports.

Sharing details of her son’s death with NBC 10 Boston, Lois Woluba, the mother of 14-year-old Harris Woluba, said the teen’s family believes he died as a result of the challenge after he ate a very spicy Baki steak at school and became ill afterwards.

After eating the chips, Wallopah, a sophomore at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester at the time of his death, was picked up by his family and reportedly began to feel better.

His mother told the outlet that his brother found Woluba passed out before basketball tryouts at around 4:30 p.m. that evening and took him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

After Wolobah’s death, Worcester Public Schools provides grief counseling and emotional support to students and staff.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that we have lost a rising star, Harris Wolpah, who was a sophomore scholar at Doherty Memorial High School. As a mother and educator, I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for his family, friends and teachers.” Rachel Monares, superintendent of the Worcester Schools, said in a statement today. Sunday.

“My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved him,” Monarez added.

The Paqui chip challenge, which is being promoted on the company’s website, tests an individual’s ability to eat chips and withstand any liquids to reduce or lessen the burning sensation.

The company asks potential online buyers: “How long can you last before it screws up.”

The chip manufacturer’s website also warns of adverse medical effects after eating the chip and insists it should only be taken by adults. In addition, Packy advises those who eat the chips to seek medical attention if they experience “difficulty breathing, fainting, or prolonged nausea.”

“After touching the chip, wash your hands with soap and do not touch the eyes or other sensitive areas,” the brand said online.

The chip the company introduced this year, according to the website, features Carolina Reaper Pepper and Naga Viper Pepper for a “truly quirky experience.”
