Students say the locks at Belmont Abbey’s dorm were malfunctioning when an unidentified man entered several rooms

An unidentified person entered several dormitories at Belmont Abbey College’s St Michael’s Dorm on Sunday morning, officials said.

According to students who spoke to Channel 9’s Anthony Kustura, the doors will only open with a key card. At the St. Michael dormitory where the incident occurred, students said the key cards used to access the building, the elevator and the stairwells had not worked for weeks.

“It was a little shocking because I feel like this is a pretty safe campus,” said Samantha Gustek, a freshman.

Sophomore Brenden Chandler, who lives in the dorm, said many students don’t lock their doors for security reasons, and he and his roommate unlocked their doors.

According to Belmont Abbey College campus police, video showed the person entering only unlocked rooms in the St. Michaels residence hall.

They shared security footage of the suspect, who is accused of trespassing just before 7am Sunday, before apparently driving off in a dark-colored SUV.

Police have not identified the intruder but said he was wearing a black T-shirt and plaid shorts.

Police advise people to keep their dorm rooms locked at all times and to call campus police immediately if an unknown person walks in unexpectedly.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with additional information or who can identify the person in the images is asked to call campus police at 704-400-6200.
