Student stabbed at Northern Durham High School. What you should know

A student was injured in a knife attack Monday morning at Northern High School, forcing the campus to be put on lockdown before noon.

According to a news release, deputies with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office detained three students for questioning.

A student, whose identity was not released, was allegedly stabbed during an altercation at school before 11 a.m., authorities said. The student was taken to hospital.

“Children are safe here at Northern,” Durham Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said in a news conference in the student parking lot before 1 p.m. “We will continue to work together and continue to be prepared because unfortunately these things will happen.” Schools are not immune to violence or incidents of this nature. That is why it is important that we reassure our public, our parents and our students that we are doing everything we can “What we can do to make sure they are safe.”

The lockdown was lifted around 1 p.m., ABC11, The News & Observer’s news gathering partner, reported.

The Northern High School campus is the latest public school in Durham to be built. The opening was delayed on August 31st.
