The billionaire also waged war on British royals after his first son, Dodi, with his first wife, Saudi author Samira Khashoggi (aunt of murdered political journalist Jamal Khashoggi), died in a fatal car crash in 1997.

Dodi was able to attract Diana through her work with her father at Harrods, which she frequented. After her split from Dr. Hasnat Khan in the summer of 1997, Dodi invited Diana and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to vacation with his family in the south of France.

The relationship only lasted 30 days after she suffered the unfortunate crash. Al-Fayed, however, insisted the incident was a murder and remained contemptuous of the royals.

He also financially backed a 2011 documentary. unlawful killing, who presented his version of events. The film was never officially released due to the potential for libel lawsuits.
