Gypsy Rose Blanchard shares her first selfie after being released from prison

Gypsy Rose Blanchard shared her first selfie after being released from prison, after pleading guilty in 2016 to the second-degree murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

The 32-year-old took to Instagram on Dec. 29 to share the mirror selfie, a day after she was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Facility in Missouri. Blanchard had served 85 percent of her sentence, eight years after confessing that she and her online boyfriend – Nicholas Godejohn – had plotted to kill her mother.

After Blanchard’s arrest, an investigation revealed that she had been abused by her mother Dee Dee, who had forced her to pretend she was disabled since childhood.

In the new mirror selfie, Blanchard could be seen posing in jeans and an ombré blue and white long-sleeved shirt, as she smiled at the camera. She appears to have taken the photo in a hotel room, as two of her suitcases were open on the floor.

She commemorated the new photo in the caption, writing: “First selfie of freedom! »

In 2015, Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee at least 17 times at her home in Springfield, Missouri, while Blanchard hid in a bathroom during the assault. Following the assault, Godejohn and Blanchard allegedly stole money from Dee Dee, before traveling to Wisconsin by bus.

After authorities were alerted to a post on Dee Dee’s Facebook page – which read: “This B*** is dead!” » – her body was found on June 14, 2015. While Blanchard’s community was initially concerned about her disappearance, Blanchard and Godejohn were later arrested and charged with murder.

Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016, while Godejohn was ultimately convicted and sentenced to life in prison for murder and 25 years in prison for armed criminal action.

Until the age of 24, Blanchard was psychologically and physically abused by her mother, who forced her to pretend she was disabled. Dee Dee allegedly suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, forcing her daughter to pretend to be chronically ill. Following Blanchard’s arrest, her neighbors told the media that she still used a wheelchair and that Dee Dee had claimed that her daughter suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy and several other chronic illnesses.

Investigations later determined that Dee Dee may have fabricated these allegations to gain financial gain and sympathy. Among these claims, Dee Dee had also claimed that she and her daughter were victims of Hurricane Katrina and were displaced by the 2005 disaster. As a result, the charity Habitat for Humanity built a tiny house with a wheelchair ramp in Springfield for the Blanchards. .

In a 2019 interview with ABC News, Blanchard said she realized her mother was lying about many of her conditions. She also claimed that her mother forced her to take medication she did not need, some of which caused her teeth to fall out. “There are certain illnesses that I know I didn’t have, I know I didn’t need them. the feeding tube,” Blanchard said. “I knew I could eat and walk, but I believed my mother when she told me I had leukemia. »

In a recent interview with People released on the day of his release, Blanchard spoke about what’s next for his future. She told the outlet she remains focused on those close to her, including her husband Ryan Scott Anderson — a special education teacher she met in 2020 after sending him letters while he was in prison. In July 2022, the couple married in a small ceremony at the Missouri Correctional Institution.

“My husband Ryan has been an emotional backbone for the last three years,” she said. “We met when the pandemic was really, really bad and I had a lot of emotional ups and downs because of Covid.”

Blanchard noted that after her release, she and her husband plan to start a family of their own. However, she opened up about some of the difficult conversations she might one day have with her kids about DeDe.

“We’re in love,” she said before adding, “It’s hard because I’m going into a new life and I’m newly married, and I’m going to have kids one day, and I’m going to have to explain to my kids why their grandmother on mom’s side isn’t there. And that’s going to be a really difficult conversation.

A few weeks before his release from prison, Blanchard said TMZ that she wants to meet pop star Taylor Swift. She revealed that she and her husband had tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium on Dec. 31, hoping to see NFL star Travis Kelce’s girlfriend there. Swift has made several appearances at his matches since September.
