George Santos and his aide appear to be discussing plea deals with the government

NEW YORK – Rep. George Santos and his former campaign aide, both of whom have been charged by federal prosecutors, appear to be in negotiations with the government, according to court filings Tuesday.

Prosecutors in the Santos case asked the judge on the case to postpone a court hearing scheduled for Thursday because “the parties continued to discuss possible courses of action on the matter.” They added: “The parties would like more time to continue these talks.”

Santos, a New York Republican who was in his first term in office, pleaded not guilty in May to federal charges of wire fraud, money laundering and theft of public funds. Prosecutors charged him with fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits, using campaign funds to pay off personal debt and buying designer clothes, and lying to the House of Representatives about his financial situation.

Last month, one of Santos’ former campaign aides, Samuel Miele, was also indicted for allegedly posing as a House leadership adviser when soliciting donations to Santos’ campaign. Miele, who was accused of wire fraud and identity theft, pleaded not guilty.

However, on Tuesday, prosecutors in his case told the court that she and Miele would have to postpone a hearing “to allow for ongoing investigative review and appeal hearings,” adding that “negotiations on a possible resolution of this case are being held without the need.” of a process.” actively and continuously.”

Santos, who is running for re-election, had previously stated that he had no intention of resigning from the House of Representatives and wishing to continue his campaign. “I will fight the witch hunt,” he told reporters in the hours after his indictment. “I’ll see to clearing my name.”
