A San Francisco store employee who was beaten into a coma by a robber last week has died, his family said.

Johannes Twelde’s family told FOX San Francisco he passed away just before 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Tewelde family.

Tweldy, 60, was attacked last week at a market in outer Richmond.

“I was at home. I got a call from my mom. My dad is in the hospital. I didn’t think it was that serious. Here we are,” Myron Teweldy, Teweldy’s daughter, said in an earlier interview.

He sustained a brain injury while trying to stop the thief. The owner of the market told the media that the suspect stole water and returned 10 minutes later to grab two cans of beer.

Tweldy used a bat to stop the thief, who knocked him down. Twelde fell and hit his head on the ground, and the suspect used the bat to hit Twelde before fleeing the scene, still at large.

Tewelde underwent two surgeries, but never regained consciousness.

His family said he underwent heart surgery in March and was granted US citizenship eight weeks before the attack.

“Right after heart surgery, he didn’t wait to go back to work because he wanted to be there,” Miron said. “There is something about this community that he loves. He loves everyone there.”
